Wide boys and their cars...

Prepare yourself for the widest screenshots we've ever taken. Thanks to a handy gadget from Matrox we have managed the perhaps mythical feat of running 4 seperate monitors from my poor wheezing, 6800 Go equipped laptop. Well, I say wheezing, but actually it held up well enough to run a few laps of my current favourite tipple, the GTR2 preview code... on three screens and at the frankly humongous resolution of 3,840x1,024. Extended desktops be damned - this is perfect for sims. The amazing thing is, hunker down in your chair and it actually feels like you are nestled in the cockpit of a snorting race machine.

Now of course this wouldn't be much fun without screenshots, so here you go - click the thumbnails for what are quite possibly the widest screenshots of a game you've ever seen:

It's certainly a perfect showcase for GTR2's fancy high resolution 3D cockpits. The final shot is of the Lotus Elise, which has a central driving position and as a result gives the best representation of the effect. As you scroll across the image it should feel like you are looking around the cockpit. The amazing thing is, this is entirely playable and all comes from just one VGA port, meaning I had the laptop's screen showing my MSN messenger contacts as I batted through Eau Rouge. Very impressive, and a video of it in action should be appearing shortly. Look out for the full review of the Matrox Triplehead2Go in PC Format issue 189 on the 15th June.
